Can I be prosecuted without being charged or questioned by the police or a prosecutor?

I was involved in a scuffle with 2 or 3 other people. I was never at any time spoken to by the police, yet was told by my lawyer that I had to attend court as there was a warrant for my arrest. I attended, and was given bail, and still never having been spoken to by anyone have now been served with an indictment for serious ault. can this be right?
